How to Improve Curb Appeal
The main goal of most landscaping is to improve curb appeal, because we all want to be the envy of the neighborhood. Here are some things to remember when planning your next landscaping project.
Have a clear path
Remember that the path leading to your front door should be immediately visible from the street. This will draw people’s eyes to your home and give it a welcoming feel. When lining the path with plants, choose something low. Also, stay away from tall trees or shrubs that will make people feel boxed in. You can change things up by replacing your concrete path with paving stones or perhaps bluestone steps.
Be mindful not to overdo it when designing your new landscape. Highly attractive properties should have a focal point that draws the attention of passersby. This could be an ornamental tree or shrub, a garden feature, or the home itself. It’s important that everything else in your landscape supports the main focus—and doesn’t detract from it. Use a variety of elements to create a pattern that feels natural and pleasing to the eye. You can learn more about focal points here.
Coordinate Colors for Curb Appeal
If your home is neutral in color, or has natural-colored stone or brick, plant some colorful plants. Be sure to stick to a limited color palette, as too much color can be overwhelming. One of the best ways to improve your curb appeal is to add a few accents. You can also consider adding a more permanent pop of color by adding color to shutters or doors. If your home has a lot going on out front, you may want to try sticking to neutral tones that complement the color palette of the home.
Don’t forget the house!
Design a landscape that fits your home. Size, color, and lawn size should all be considered when planning your new landscape. If you have a single-story home, you may want to consider using trees, shrubs, and other plant material that is lower to the ground. Sometimes, less is more.
Consider budget and maintenance
It’s a good idea to make a budget for your project. Creating this at the beginning can save you from having to go back and remove elements from your design. Remember to give yourself a buffer, just in case prices change or you run into unforeseen problems.
This is also a good time to consider maintenance. If you don’t anticipate having the time or don’t know how to keep up with your landscape, be sure to select low-maintenance trees and shrubs. This is a good way to ensure your plants will look great all year long.
